The Pratyabhijna system was first prepared by Ksemaraja, the brilliant pupil of Abhinavgupta, a versatile genius
and master of Tantra Yoga, Philosophy, Poetics, etc. Abhinavgupta flourished in the tenth century A.D. Since Ksemaraja was his pupil, he must also have lived in the tenth century.
The Pratyabhijna means re-cognition.
The individual self or jiva is divine or Siva, but has forgotten his real nature, and is identified with his psycho-physical mechanism. The teaching is meant to enable him to recognise his real nature, to bring home to him the truth that his real Self is noe other than Siva and to suggest to him the spiritual discipline by which he can attain `at-one-ment' with Him.
